Matching the correct miniature schnauzer puppy with its forever home!
Through years of experience, we have developed our adoption process to focus on the compatibility of each miniature schnauzer puppy with their adopter family. We believe that a successful adoption always starts with placing the correct schnauzer with the correct family.
1. Phone Discussion – While forms serve a purpose, nothing replaces genuine conversation. We’ll talk about your schedule, household dynamics, and expectations to ensure a Fernweh Miniature Schnauzer fits your lifestyle. For Rhode Island families, building strong communication and relationships is essential for finding your perfect puppy.
2. Deposit – A $500 non-refundable deposit (please add 4% processing fee for credit/debit cards) reserves your place on our waiting list for the next available miniature schnauzer puppy.
3. Miniature Schnauzer Selection – When you reach the top of our list, we begin the selection process. We’ll discuss personalities* (explained below) and examine each mini schnauzer puppy’s characteristics before making a choice. You make the final selection, but we provide comprehensive information and support throughout. Rhode Island families receive all the guidance needed to choose the right puppy for their household.

*Miniature Schnauzer Personality Assessment – Successful matching requires understanding each puppy’s temperament. We spend significant time observing puppies, noting energy levels and confidence traits. This evaluation starts around 5 weeks when personalities emerge clearly. Some families request selections at 1-2 weeks, but we decline these requests since puppies’ characters aren’t developed enough for accurate matching.
4. Mini Schnauzer Preparation and Delivery Details Once we’ve paired you with your miniature schnauzer puppy, we’ll arrange pickup or delivery timing and provide a complete supply checklist. For Rhode Island families, we’ll coordinate logistics – whether you prefer traveling to our home for pickup or having a family member drive your puppy to Rhode Island.
Your Fernweh puppy comes home with complete AKC registration documents, current health records including vaccinations and deworming, comprehensive veterinary documentation, and a thoughtful starter kit containing toys, quality puppy food, a detailed care guide, and a familiar-scented blanket from their litter.
Yes! Every puppy receives thorough veterinary examinations and stays current with all age-appropriate vaccinations and deworming protocols before joining your family.
Your puppy will have been introduced to crate basics and simple commands. However, miniature schnauzer puppies typically develop full housetraining readiness around 10-12 weeks of age, so continued training at home will be necessary.
Our puppies go home at 10 weeks of age. This extra time with their mother and siblings provides valuable socialization and developmental benefits that set them up for success.

Over the years we’ve worked with numerous Rhode Island miniature schnauzer families. Here’s valuable information we’ve gathered for future adopters.
Providence Area: Dr. Michael Ferreira, DVM – East Bay Animal Hospital, Warren Portuguese-speaking veterinarian with extensive small breed experience, Dr. Ferreira specializes in preventive care for genetic conditions affecting miniature schnauzers, particularly focusing on metabolic and eye health.
Why We Recommend: Rhode Island families appreciate Dr. Ferreira’s bilingual services and weekend availability. Several adopters mentioned his proactive approach caught early signs of cataracts, preventing vision loss. His gentle handling makes even anxious schnauzers comfortable.
Newport County: Dr. Jessica Thornton, DVM – Aquidneck Veterinary Hospital, Middletown Cornell-trained with additional certification in small animal nutrition, Dr. Thornton excels at managing dietary sensitivities common in miniature schnauzers and offers specialized weight management programs.
Why We Recommend: Our Newport County families value Dr. Thornton’s nutritional expertise. One family credits her custom diet plan with completely eliminating their schnauzer’s skin allergies. She remembers every patient by name and personality.
Northern Rhode Island: Dr. Thomas Liu, DVM – Blackstone Valley Animal Hospital, Cumberland Board-certified in veterinary dentistry with particular interest in small breed oral health, Dr. Liu provides specialized dental care crucial for schnauzer health maintenance.
Why We Recommend: Families throughout northern RI make the drive for Dr. Liu’s dental expertise. Multiple adopters told us his preventive dental program has saved them thousands in potential treatments while keeping their schnauzers’ teeth healthy.
Maria Santos, CCPDT – Ocean State Dog Training, Cranston Certified trainer specializing in terrier breeds for over 15 years, Maria offers Portuguese and English classes. Her small dog socialization programs are designed specifically for breeds like miniature schnauzers.
Why We Recommend: Families love Maria’s understanding of the schnauzer personality. One adopter mentioned how Maria helped them channel their schnauzer’s “alert barking” into appropriate watchdog behavior. Her small dog play groups are legendary for building confidence.
David Carpenter – Narragansett Bay K9 Academy, East Greenwich Former police K9 handler who transitioned to positive reinforcement training, David excels at building confidence in smaller breeds through structured activities and urban socialization.
Why We Recommend: Our families appreciate David’s patience with stubborn terriers. Several mentioned their schnauzers went from pulling on walks to perfect heel position after his leash training workshop. His “Tiny But Mighty” confidence course is perfect for schnauzers.
Why Our Families Love This: One Bristol family walks Colt State Park daily, saying their schnauzer has appointed himself “official greeter” to other morning walkers. The East Bay path’s smooth surface is perfect for senior schnauzers with joint concerns.
Why Our Families Love This: A Providence family found their human best friends through Schnauzer Squad. The indoor winter options keep Rhode Island schnauzers socialized despite weather. One adopter says their shy schnauzer bloomed after joining these groups.
Why Our Families Love This: Newport families enjoy combining exercise with sightseeing. One family’s schnauzer has become Instagram-famous posing at Cliff Walk landmarks. The outdoor dining options make Newport perfect for including schnauzers in weekend plans.
Why Our Families Love This: With New England weather, indoor facilities are crucial. Families report Fetch RI saved their sanity during winter storms. The DIY grooming stations help maintain schnauzer coats between professional appointments.
Why Our Families Love This: Our families discovered these quieter spots perfect for water-shy schnauzers. One Warren family says Barker Field’s gentle slope helped their schnauzer learn to love swimming. Off-season beach visits avoid crowds that overwhelm small dogs.
Why Our Families Love This: City families use these locations for socialization training. One Federal Hill family says their schnauzer knows every vendor at the farmers market. Wickford’s quiet streets are ideal for leash training without distractions.
Why Our Families Love This: These locations offer adventure without exhausting small legs. One family calls Lincoln Woods their “schnauzer paradise” – manageable trails plus water access. The shorter trails are perfect for puppies and seniors alike.
Special Rhode Island Considerations: Rhode Island’s coastal climate brings unique challenges. Ocean breezes can chill small schnauzers quickly, so bring layers even on mild days. Salt air and winter road salt require regular paw cleaning and coat care. During summer, beaches get hot quickly – early morning or evening visits work best. Many Rhode Island schnauzers develop thick coats in response to sea breezes, requiring more frequent grooming than inland dogs. Watch for seasonal allergies during spring as Rhode Island’s dense vegetation can trigger reactions in sensitive schnauzers!
