Dogs are family!

“How Fernweh became one of the best miniature schnauzer breeders in the country”

From owning our very first Miniature Schnauzer to creating an established bloodline known and loved by adopters far and wide, our journey as an AKC Miniature Schnauzer Breeder has been an incredible experience! It all started with a simple idea. An idea founded on both our lifestyle and belief system, embedded by a dedication towards caring for our furry four legged friends. Fernweh Miniature Schnauzers was founded on the principle that dogs are family. It’s a phrase and belief system that we hear often. It touches on the emotional and physical impact that our four legged friends can have within a home. It hints at a value set that elevates our canine companions; an acknowledgement that they represent something more…something bigger.

Our Schnauzers Come First

“The key to success is to revolve every decision around the well being of our dogs’

Early on we realized  that everything we do as miniature schnauzer breeders needed to revolve around the well being of our miniature schnauzers.  We were initially attracted to the breed because of its hypoallergenic characteristics and intelligence.  We then quickly fell in love with our Schnauzer’s unique personalities and loyalty.  We developed our value systems out of love and respect for the breed.  Our breeding program is first most importantly dedicated to producing healthy bloodlines because of the heartbreak an unhealthy mini schnauzer puppy can have on a family.  We follow our socialization program diligently, because we want every one of our miniature schnauzer puppies to be prepared and flourish in their new homes.  Our interview process and puppy matching program are designed to ensure each one of our miniature schnauzer puppies is homed with the correct family and has the best chance of succeeding.  You see, if you truly do care and if you dogs really are family, the quality of our dogs and happiness of our adopters will take care of itself.

If you are interested in a mini schnauzer I highly recommend Fernweh Miniature Schnauzers. Not only do they take your wants in a dog into consideration but they also assess the personalities of the puppies to make sure you get a puppy that will be a great fit for your family. Erica made the whole process very easy too. In fact, we were so impressed with them as breeders and love our Fernweh mini so much we’re bringing home another soon!

After a lot of research on miniature schnauzers and looking at numerous breeders both local and out of town, we found Erika and her puppies to be the top quality dog we were looking for. We were so thrilled to be able to get our little boy, Achilles, during the pandemic. He is healthy, well behaved and such a happy boy! He had a great head start on potty and crate training when we got him, so this process was very easy for him. We are very thankful for Fernweh Miniature Schnauzers and highly recommend them. We’ll definitely be reaching out when we’re ready for Achilles’ sibling 🙂

The team at Fernweh Mini Schnauzers does an incredible job of screening and working with prospective owners. They spent time talking to me about my previous Mini Schnauzer and what i was looking for. They were attentive and replied back quickly whenever I had questions. Our little Winnie is going to be 1 year old this March and we could not imagine life without her. She has brought so much energy and joy into our lives and is great with her little brother! Would highly recommend Fernweh Miniature Schnauzers

Erica did a great job with potty training our puppy and making sure the puppies were healthy. We lost one of our dogs to cancer and our Gracie seemed very depressed after that. Once we brought home Callie, she seems to be much happier. Erica made the process very easy and everything was extremely professional. I did a lot of research and Fernweh Schauzers is the most reputable place to get a dog that was bred with healthy practices.

I got my puppy in July 2020 in the middle of the pandemic. Even with all crazy stuff going on, Fernweh (Erica) was able to provide us a great experience. The puppy was well taken care of and Erica is super open to answer any question of those who are first timers, like me. The puppy brought home her litter blanket, what was wonderful and super helpful on her transition. Those "small" details that make this breeder a great and reliable one. I totally recommend them 🙂 Our puppy Scully came to complete our family <3

We couldn't be happier with our Fernweh Miniature Schnauzer. Finding Fernweh seemed like fate. We have a 13 yr old Schnauzer mix at home and last spring were feeling the pandemic would be the right time to welcome another dog to our home. We happened to meet another Fernweh pup in our neighborhood on a family walk. We immediately connected with Erica who was extremely responsive and helpful. To our luck, there was a new litter available and we were able to match the "personality" of our family to the right puppy. When we picked up Arnie, everything was so well prepared. He transitioned extremely well to our home which in addition to our older dog, includes two children, ages 8 and 10. Arnie is "their" dog and they love caring for him. Arnie has now been with us for almost 9 months and we can't imagine life without him!

Erica from Fernweh schnauzers was instrumental in the adoption of our little pup, Emma , now 7 months old. The focus on healthcare for the pups was an important aspect to our successful adoption. Erica was an amazing resource during our pups transition to our home. Emma is a healthy, active , obedient and fun loving dog which is a reflection of Fernweh’s care and concerns for their pups. I highly recommend Fernweh breeders, they’re the best!

We chose Fernweh for their breeding practices, socialization program, and health guarantees. Our questions and concerns were answered and Erica helped us choose a puppy that would best fit in with our family. We took her home in the Fall of 2020 and she is doing great. We would, and have, recommended Fernweh to anyone looking to add a mini to their family.

I am so glad that we found Fernweh Schnauzers. Erica was wonderful to work with, just like talking with your best friend. She helped us find the perfect personality in a pup that we were hoping for. Our puppy has been a fantastic addition to our family. I highly recommend working with them. They are always available for help after adoption as well. It is so easy to see how much they love and care for their pups !

We had a great experience all around with this breeder. They were knowledgeable and made sure our new little edition was the right fit for our family. We could not be happier with our sweet little girl!

Fernweh Schnauzers are known to be healthy.  As one of the top Miniature Schnauzer Breeders, how do you breed for a healthier Schnauzer?

Like all things in life, breeding for health is simply a matter of priority.  We are blind to many of the breed priorities that distract other bulldog breeders from improving the health of their Schnauzer.  We focus on health and personality and very little else.  We are not interested in winning a blue ribbon in the show ring.  Rather, we test for things like luxated patellar tendons, eye issues, heart defects, hip dysplasia, ect.  We focus and prioritize creating healthy bloodlines, therefore our schnauzers are typically much healthier than the breed as a whole.  While it’s not rocket science, it is a uniquely different take within miniature schnauzer breeders and all of our AKC miniature schnauzer puppies reflect this value set.

After breeding for health, what other priorities are you focused on?

Our true desire is to create the perfect family schnauzers.  We believe a healthy schnauzer = a happy family.  We also believe a schnauzer bred for the correct personality is essential to the family unit as well.  A Fernweh Schnauzer is bred for intelligence and playfulness.  We want our Schnauzers to be full of personality and some fun.   We believe a full personality along with intelligence is the true North star of the Schnauzer breed and is what makes them unique among other breeds. We look for these personality traits in our adult Schnauzers and continue to create bloodlines that reflect these qualities and produce high quality Miniature Schnauzers for sale.

I have been looking for reputable Miniature Schnauzer Breeders near me.  Where are you located?

We are located in the Northeast corner of Indiana.  We just happen to be about 2.5 hour drive from the Illinois state line and specifically Chicago.  We are also about a 30 minute drive from the Michigan and Ohio state lines.  Other major cities within 2.5 hour driving distance are Indianapolis, Detroit, Columbus, Cincinnati, and Cleveland.   If you are Googling, miniature schnauzer puppy near me we certainly could be a close possibility.

What if I am not located locally?  Do you offer delivery services?

A large portion of our adopters are located on the East Coast and Southern states.  While many do make the drive to pickup, we also offer a delivery service to those with extremely busy schedules or limited ability to travel.  We personally, hand delivery our Miniature Schnauzers to our East Coast and Southern adopter’s homes to ensure they arrive safe and stress free.  We also utilize our own flight nanny for our West Coast adopters looking to have their schnauzer puppy hand delivered.  Whether through pickup or through delivery service, we try to be the type of miniature schnauzer breeder that is ethical and responsible to both our Schnauzers and adopters.  If you are looking for an AKC miniature schnauzer breeder, we have several safe options for delivery.

What is the typical temperament of Schnauzers?

Schnauzers are known for being intelligent, alert, and spirited. They are generally friendly, energetic, and make excellent family pets.  We have found it essential to socialize our Schnauzers at an early age to improve their temperament into their adult lives.  A socialized Schnauzer = a well tempered Schnauzer.

Are Schnauzers good with children?

Schnauzers are often good with children, especially when socialized from a young age. They are known to be protective and playful.  Our children and family have grown up with Schnauzers.  We have found the breed to be phenomenal with children.  High levels of intelligence allows the Schnauzer breed to flourish around children.

How much exercise do Schnauzers require?

Schnauzers are an energetic breed that requires regular exercise. Daily walks, playtime, and mental stimulation are essential for their well-being.

Do Schnauzers shed a lot?

Schnauzers have a wiry double coat that doesn’t shed much. Regular grooming, including brushing and professional grooming, helps keep their coat in good condition.

Are Schnauzers easy to train?

Schnauzers are intelligent and generally respond well to training. Consistent and positive reinforcement methods work best with this breed.

What health issues are common in Schnauzers?

Some health concerns in Schnauzers include pancreatitis, hip dysplasia, and certain eye conditions. Regular veterinary check-ups and a healthy diet can help prevent some of these issues.

How often should I groom my Schnauzer?

Grooming needs vary among the different Schnauzer types, but generally, they require regular brushing, ear cleaning, and professional grooming every 6-8 weeks.

Are Schnauzers good for apartment living?

Miniature Schnauzers, in particular, can adapt well to apartment living, provided they get enough exercise. Standard and Giant Schnauzers may need more space due to their larger size.

Do Schnauzers get along with other pets?

With proper socialization, Schnauzers can get along well with other pets. Early exposure to different animals helps in fostering positive relationships.

What is the average lifespan of a Schnauzer?

The lifespan of a Schnauzer can vary by size, but on average, they live between 12 to 15 years. Providing proper care and a healthy lifestyle can contribute to a longer, fulfilling life.

Do Schnauzers bark a lot?

Schnauzers can be vocal and may bark to alert their owners, making them good watchdogs. Proper training can help manage excessive barking.
