What We Offer

Adoption Process For Our Mississippi Adopters

Matching the correct miniature schnauzer puppy with its forever home!

Through years of experience, we have developed our adoption process to focus on the compatibility of each miniature schnauzer puppy with their adopter family. We believe that a successful adoption always starts with placing the correct schnauzer with the correct family.

Steps of our adoption process:

1. Phone Interview – Written applications offer basics, but conversation provides deeper insights. We’ll discuss your lifestyle, home environment, and goals to ensure a Fernweh Miniature Schnauzer fits your situation. For Mississippi families, building strong communication and trust creates the foundation for finding your perfect puppy.

2. Deposit – A $500 non-refundable deposit (please add 4% processing fee if using credit/debit card) reserves your place on our waiting list for the next miniature schnauzer puppy available.

3. Schnauzer Selection – When you reach the top of our list, we guide you through puppy selection. We’ll discuss personalities* (explained below) and evaluate each mini schnauzer puppy’s characteristics before choosing. You make the final selection, but we provide thorough information and support. Mississippi families receive comprehensive guidance to choose the right puppy.

*Miniature Schnauzer Personality Profiling – Successful matching demands understanding individual temperaments. We spend significant time with puppies, observing energy levels and social behaviors. Personality assessment starts around 5 weeks when traits become clear. Some families request 1-2 week selections, which we decline since personalities aren’t developed enough for accurate matching.

4. Puppy Preparation and Transportation – After matching you with your miniature schnauzer puppy, we’ll coordinate pickup or delivery timing and provide a detailed supply checklist. Mississippi families can visit our Indiana home for pickup or arrange for a family member to drive your puppy to Mississippi.

Mississippi Specific Advice From An Experienced Schnauzer Breeder

Jackson Metro: Dr. William Jefferson, DVM – Magnolia State Animal Hospital, Madison Mississippi State University graduate with board certification in small animal medicine, Dr. Jefferson specializes in breed-specific preventive care for miniature schnauzers, particularly focusing on heat-related conditions.

Why We Recommend: Jackson area families appreciate Dr. Jefferson’s understanding of Mississippi climate challenges. Several adopters credit his cooling protocols with preventing heat exhaustion. His expanded weekend hours accommodate working families.

Gulf Coast Region: Dr. Amanda Rodriguez, DVM – Coastal Veterinary Specialists, Biloxi LSU-trained with additional certification in veterinary dermatology, Dr. Rodriguez excels at managing skin conditions aggravated by coastal humidity, crucial for miniature schnauzer health.

Why We Recommend: Coast families value Dr. Rodriguez’s expertise with humidity-related issues. One family eliminated their schnauzer’s chronic ear infections through her comprehensive treatment approach. She provides detailed home care instructions.

North Mississippi: Dr. James Chen, DVM – Oxford Animal Clinic, Oxford Auburn graduate with specialized training in veterinary ophthalmology, Dr. Chen provides expert eye care while maintaining a general practice serving the miniature schnauzer community.

Why We Recommend: North Mississippi families travel for Dr. Chen’s specialized care. Multiple adopters mentioned his early detection of genetic eye conditions. His gentle examination techniques work perfectly with nervous schnauzers.

Betty Thompson, CPDT-KA – Delta Dog Training, Jackson Certified trainer with 20 years specializing in terrier breeds, Betty schedules training during cooler hours and emphasizes Mississippi-specific challenges like snake avoidance and heat management.

Climate-Controlled Options

Why Our Families Love This: Mississippi summers demand indoor alternatives. Families maintain exercise routines in air conditioning. One Gulfport family says indoor daycare “saves our sanity” June through September.

Water Recreation

Why Our Families Love This: Families discovered water activities help beat Mississippi heat. One Pickwick family taught their schnauzer to swim in shallow coves. Morning lake visits provide cooling exercise.

Historic Downtown Strolls

Why Our Families Love This: Families combine culture with exercise. An Oxford family’s schnauzer has become a Square regular, greeting bookstore visitors. These areas provide shaded walks with interesting sights.

Schnauzer Communities

Why Our Families Love This: One Jackson family found lifelong friends through schnauzer meetups. Groups organize early morning summer sessions and indoor winter alternatives.

Small Dog Activities

Why Our Families Love This: These programs engage schnauzer intelligence appropriately. One family discovered their schnauzer’s talent for nose work during summer indoor classes. Air-conditioned venues enable year-round training.

Seasonal Adventures

Why Our Families Love This: Mississippi families adapt activities seasonally. Spring garden visits showcase blooms before summer heat. One family plans all cave explorations for summer, using natural air conditioning.

Special Mississippi Considerations: Mississippi’s extreme heat and humidity require careful planning for miniature schnauzers. Schedule activities before 8 AM or after 7 PM from May through September. Red clay stains light beards – keep cleaning wipes accessible. Mosquitoes thrive year-round, making heartworm prevention essential. Fire ants pose serious threats – check grass before allowing play. Many Mississippi schnauzers need bi-weekly ear cleaning due to humidity. Hurricane preparedness includes crate training and evacuation supplies. Kudzu-covered areas hide snakes – stay on cleared paths. Summer requires cooling mats and elevated beds for air circulation. Thunderstorms arrive quickly – practice calm behavior indoors. Consider professional snake avoidance training for rural properties. Many Mississippi families create shaded outdoor areas with misters for safe summer play. The friendly culture means frequent attention from strangers – ensure proper socialization. Hunting season requires bright visibility gear on rural trails. Indoor potty options help during severe weather. Watch for armadillos – curious schnauzers may chase them into trouble!
