What We Offer

Adoption Process For Our Kentucky Adopters

Matching the correct miniature schnauzer puppy with its forever home!

Through years of experience, we have developed our adoption process to focus on the compatibility of each miniature schnauzer puppy with their adopter family. We believe that a successful adoption always starts with placing the correct schnauzer with the correct family.

Steps of our adoption process:

1. Verbal Interview – While questionnaires serve a purpose, real conversation reveals genuine compatibility. We’ll discuss your work schedule, family dynamics, and expectations to ensure a Fernweh Miniature Schnauzer fits your lifestyle. Because of your Kentucky location, communication and building trust are essential foundations for finding your ideal puppy.

2. Deposit – We require a $500 non-refundable deposit (please add a 4% processing fee if using credit/debit card) to join our wait list for the next miniature schnauzer puppy available.

3. Miniature Schnauzer Selection – Once you’ve reached your turn on the waiting list, we begin the puppy selection process. Personalities will be discussed* (read more below), and we’ll evaluate each mini schnauzer puppy’s traits before making a selection. Ultimately, you make the final choice, but we provide comprehensive support and information. Kentucky families can expect thorough guidance in selecting the correct puppy for their family.

*Miniature Schnauzer Puppy Personality Profiling – To ensure proper matching, we must understand each puppy’s temperament. We conduct personality profiling by spending extensive time with each puppy, noting both energy levels and confidence traits. This process requires puppies to be around 5 weeks old before we can accurately profile personalities. Some adopters request choosing their puppy at 1-2 weeks old, which we deny as this approach often leads to mismatches since puppies haven’t developed their true personalities.

4. Mini Schnauzer Puppy Prep and Transportation Details – After matching you with your miniature schnauzer puppy, we’ll coordinate pickup or delivery dates and prepare you with a puppy supply list. For Kentucky families, we’ll work through logistics – whether traveling for an in-person pickup at our home or using one of our family members to drive your puppy to Kentucky.

Kentucky Specific Advice From An Experienced Schnauzer Breeder

Over the years we’ve worked with numerous Kentucky miniature schnauzer families. Here’s valuable information we’ve gathered for future adopters.

Louisville Area: Dr. Michael Harrison, DVM – Bluegrass Veterinary Specialists, Louisville University of Kentucky graduate with board certification in small animal medicine, Dr. Harrison specializes in breed-specific wellness programs for terriers, with particular expertise in metabolic conditions affecting miniature schnauzers.

Why We Recommend: Louisville families appreciate Dr. Harrison’s preventive approach to schnauzer health. Several adopters credit his early screening protocols with catching thyroid issues before symptoms appeared. His Saturday clinics accommodate working families perfectly.

Lexington Region: Dr. Jennifer Walsh, DVM – Chevy Chase Animal Clinic, Lexington Cornell-trained with additional certification in veterinary nutrition, Dr. Walsh excels at managing dietary sensitivities common in miniature schnauzers and offers specialized weight management programs.

Why We Recommend: Central Kentucky families value Dr. Walsh’s nutritional expertise. One family eliminated their schnauzer’s chronic digestive issues through her customized diet plan. She takes time explaining conditions and remembers every patient by name.

Northern Kentucky: Dr. David Park, DVM – Cincinnati Animal Referral & Emergency, Wilder Board-certified in veterinary ophthalmology with extensive small breed experience, Dr. Park provides specialized eye care crucial for miniature schnauzers while maintaining emergency services.

Why We Recommend: Northern Kentucky families travel for Dr. Park’s expertise. Multiple adopters mentioned his early intervention saved their schnauzers’ vision. His 24/7 emergency availability provides peace of mind for worried owners.

Susan Crawford, CPDT-KA – Derby City Dog Training, Louisville Certified trainer specializing in terrier breeds for over 15 years, Susan combines positive reinforcement with breed-specific techniques that work well with the miniature schnauzer’s independent nature.

Why We Recommend: Louisville families rave about Susan’s understanding of schnauzer psychology. One adopter shared how she helped them realize their schnauzer’s “stubbornness” was actually intelligence needing mental challenges. Her small dog socialization hours are legendary.

Mark Stevens – Bluegrass K9 Academy, Lexington Former service dog trainer who now focuses on companion animals, Mark excels at building confidence in small breeds through structured activities and environmental exposure.

Scenic Trail Walking

Why Our Families Love This: A Louisville family walks the Loop daily, reporting their schnauzer has befriended every regular cyclist. The Legacy Trail’s smooth surface and historic markers make walks educational and comfortable for small paws.

Schnauzer Social Groups

Why Our Families Love This: One Cherokee Park family found their closest human friends through schnauzer meetups. Groups organize barn visits during winter months, exposing city schnauzers to farm environments safely.

Historic Downtown Exploration

Why Our Families Love This: Families enjoy combining Kentucky history with exercise. A Bardstown family’s schnauzer has become a fixture on their bourbon district walks. These areas provide controlled socialization environments.

Indoor Activity Centers

Why Our Families Love This: Kentucky’s variable weather makes indoor options valuable. Families maintain grooming routines at DIY stations between professional visits. Indoor play areas keep schnauzers active during extreme temperatures.

Water Adventures

Why Our Families Love This: Families discovered perfect spots for water-wary schnauzers. One Cave Run family taught their schnauzer to swim in a peaceful inlet. Early morning visits provide solitude and cooler temperatures.

Small Dog Sports

Why Our Families Love This: These activities engage natural schnauzer abilities. One family’s schnauzer discovered talent for barn hunt, now competing statewide. Size-specific classes prevent intimidation from larger breeds.

Seasonal Kentucky Activities

Why Our Families Love This: Kentucky families embrace seasonal variety. Spring racing season provides unique socialization at Keeneland’s dog areas. One family schedules all Bernheim visits for fall, saying their schnauzer loves crunching through leaves.

Special Kentucky Considerations: Kentucky’s four-season climate requires adaptability for miniature schnauzers. Spring brings heavy rains – waterproof jackets help maintain outdoor routines. Summer humidity demands early morning or evening activities. Many Kentucky schnauzers need regular ear cleaning due to moisture. Horse country means watching for farm equipment on rural trails. Bourbon distillery tours often welcome leashed dogs in outdoor areas. Limestone-filtered water is generally excellent for schnauzers but may cause temporary digestive adjustment for visiting dogs. Fall allergens from goldenrod and ragweed affect some schnauzers – watch for excessive scratching. Winter ice storms require paw protection and careful walking. Many Kentucky families keep their schnauzers on preventive joint supplements due to the state’s varied terrain. The friendly culture means your schnauzer will get lots of attention – ensure proper socialization to handle admirers politely!
