I’ll be honest with you – dental care wasn’t something I thought much about when I started breeding schnauzers 10 years ago. But after seeing the difference it makes in our dogs’ health and happiness, I’ve become a true believer. Now I want to share what our family has learned about keeping those schnauzer smiles healthy!
Here’s something that surprised me early on: miniature schnauzers are more prone to dental issues than many other breeds. Why? Those adorable little mouths have to fit all 42 adult teeth into a pretty small space! This crowding means food particles and bacteria have lots of hiding spots.
Over the years, I’ve seen firsthand how dental problems can sneak up on even the most well-cared-for schnauzers. The tricky part is that dogs are masters at hiding mouth pain – your schnauzer might have a painful tooth and still happily eat dinner like nothing’s wrong. That’s why prevention is so important.
When people ask me about the single best thing they can do for their schnauzer’s teeth, my answer is always the same: brush them! I know it might sound silly at first, but trust me on this one.
Here’s what works for us:
I aim to brush our dogs’ teeth daily, but life happens. Even if you can only manage 3-4 times a week, you’re doing great! The key is consistency – it’s better to brush well twice a week than to attempt daily brushing and give up after a month.
Let’s talk about that magnificent schnauzer beard! It’s gorgeous, but it’s also a food magnet. After 10 years of schnauzer beards, here’s my routine:
A clean beard isn’t just about looks – it reduces bacteria near the mouth and makes those schnauzer kisses much more pleasant!

Through trial and error, we’ve found some additional things that really help:
Weekly mouth checks: Every Sunday (pick your day!), I do a quick mouth inspection on all our dogs. I’m looking for any redness, swelling, or that telltale yellow-brown buildup on the teeth. This habit has helped me catch issues early so many times.
Smart chew choices: Not all chews are created equal! I’ve learned to avoid super hard items like antlers or hard bones – we had a cracked tooth incident years ago that taught me that lesson. Instead, we use rubber toys with some give and dental chews that are firm but not rock-hard.
Water additives: When we have a particularly brush-resistant dog (yes, even breeders have those!), I’ll add a dental rinse to their water. It’s not a replacement for brushing, but it helps on those challenging days.
After all these years, I’ve learned to spot dental trouble early. Here’s what sends me to the vet:
I can’t stress this enough – find a vet you trust for dental care. We schedule dental exams during annual check-ups, but some of our schnauzers need professional cleanings more often than others. It’s just like people – some have naturally better teeth!
My vet once told me that small breeds like schnauzers often need their first professional cleaning by age 2-3. I was skeptical at first, but now I see the wisdom. Those professional cleanings get under the gum line where our toothbrushes can’t reach.
If you’re getting a Fernweh puppy, we’ve already started the dental care journey for you! From 3 weeks old, our puppies get gentle mouth handling. By the time they come home to you, they’re familiar with having their teeth touched.
Your job is to keep it going:
Take it slow – there’s no rush. Building positive associations now pays off for a lifetime.
After years of breeding and living with schnauzers, here’s what I really want you to know:
I know dental care might seem like one more thing on your to-do list, but I promise it’s worth it. We’ve had schnauzers live happy, healthy lives well into their teens, and I truly believe good dental care played a part in that.
There’s nothing quite like a schnauzer smile – those expressive faces just light up a room. By taking care of their teeth, you’re ensuring many more years of those precious smiles (and much better breath for those close-up snuggles!).
Remember, we’re always here if you have questions. Every dog is different, and sometimes it takes a bit of troubleshooting to find what works for your schnauzer. You’ve got this!
Here’s to healthy teeth and happy schnauzers!
Greetings from the Wysongs!
