Salt and Pepper Schnauzers have a very special place in our heart as they are the original color that we started our Fernweh bloodlines with. We love Salt and Pepper because it is traditional and represent the archetypical Schnauzer look. Salt and Pepper Miniature Schnauzer Puppy – The Salt and Pepper Schnauzer is the most common color within the breed and often the most popular choice amongst lifetime schnauzer adopters. The color structure of a salt and pepper is genetically of a banded coat color. What this means is that the outer guard hairs are banded in a variety colors that range from light silver to all the way to dark gray and even black on the color scheme. One single strand of hair will have a pattern of light and dark coloration on a single stalk of hair. While Salt and Pepper Schnauzers all carry a common name they are certainly not the same color. There is much variation within shading and color structure amongst even one Salt and Pepper Miniature schnauzer puppy. Occasionally, based on the adopter’s preference it will be time to schedule a grooming appointment. Adopters are often surprised to find the drastic color variation from the top coat to the undercoat. The Salt and Pepper Miniature Schnauzer can range from dark and almost black dog to pale silver and will often times appear to changed color after a grooming session!
From our original foundation bloodlines, Salt and Pepper has been Fernweh’s staple color. We would not consider ourselves color breeders, rather we focus on health and personality as first priority. Our view of rare colors is that they are fun but should not come as a priority. What is a Salt and Pepper Miniature Schnauzer?
A Salt and Pepper Schnauzer is technically a coat that is “banded”. What this means is that the outer coat hairs are banded in shades that range from very light silver to black, often ending in black hair tips. What makes the Salt and Pepper unique is that that banded trait creates a lot of color variation within the pups.
Are Salt and Pepper Miniature Schnauzers Healthy?
Yes, fortunately the Salt and Pepper color is not associated with connecting hereditary issues that sometimes correlate with specific colors. Salt and Pepper Schnauzers do not suffer from excessive health issues and have been traditionally some our healthiest bloodlines. What is the difference between a Salt and Pepper and Black and Silver Schnauzer?
Both black and silver and salt and pepper schnauzers hold to the same color “pattern”. This means that the pattern of light and dark colors are very similar on both types of Schnauzers. The two coats are different in that a Black and Silver will carry a black coat with more accentuated silver coloring around the beard and legs. In contrast, Salt and Pepper do not have such drastic color differences within their pattern.
